‘Top Gun’ Editor Billy Weber Lists Idyllic Silver Lake Retreat for $4 Million

Breathtaking views, a calming garden, and lots of privacy—sounds like a recipe for success for creative professionals who may occasionally work from home. Enter: prolific film editor Billy Weber’s tranquil Los Angeles abode, which just hit the market for $3.99 million.

Located on the crest of a ridge in the Moreno Highlands neighborhood of star-studded Silver Lake, the California residence has been home to the legendary film editor—whose impressive work portfolio includes the 1987 smash hit “Top Gun” and actress Sandra Bullock’s iconic 2000 movie “Miss Congeniality”—for 32 years.

The listing marks only the second time in the home’s 73-year history that it has been offered for sale.

Weber moved into the 3,356 square foot house in 1994. According to listing agent Thomas Raigeul of Sotheby’s International Realty, he “at times edited films” in the home, where he was living while working on projects like “Miss Congeniality” and “Nacho Libre.”

Taking a look through the listing, it’s easy to see how the four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom property would have served as a relaxing retreat for an editor who had such an impact on the film industry.

But with that said, Raigeul tells Realtor.com® that the home would be a great fit “for a multitude of different buyers.”

“As a single story, with parking at the top of the property and not on the street, it is a very accessible home,” the Los Angeles-based listing agent explains, noting the ranch-style house is a rare find in the neighborhood.

The property sits above the street on two lots which have been tied together through a covenant, and has 13,930 square feet of exterior space.

Despite being located in a popular neighborhood, the property’s elevated perch gives it a rare sense of privacy, making it feel like it’s located in a world all its own.

There’s room to enjoy the outdoors all over; stop and smell the roses in the garden in the front, entertain guests under the pergola out back, or head to the side of the lot to cool off in the pool.

“With a rose garden in the front, pergola in the back, and heated pool off the side of the home there is a perfect outdoor space for any time of day,” the listing notes.

In addition to the work that’s been done lately, Weber’s home has been well-maintained throughout his time living there. In the last 25 years, a new roof was installed, as well as air conditioning units and water heaters. A kitchen and bathroom remodel were also completed.

It’s believed that the original architect is Robert Kite, founder of Kite and Overpeck Architects, the Beverly Hills-based firm credited with iconic properties including the 9000 Sunset Building, The Beverly Hillcrest Hotel, The Standard Insurance Building at La Cienega and Wilshire, Wallichs Music City, and the original Ontario Motor Speedway.

The neighborhood has a rich history in the film industry, as well. Moreno Highlands is named after 1920s silent film star and director, Antonio Moreno, who appeared alongside Greta Garbo in the 1926 movie, “The Temptress.”

Silver Lake has also been home to several celebrities over the years, including actress Olivia Wilde, actor James Franco, and comedian Fred Armisen.

Weber has collaborated with some of the most prominent names in filmmaking, working as Terrence Malick’s primary editor for titles including “Badlands,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Thin Red Line,” and “The Tree of Life.” He is also credited on “Taxi Driver” with Martin Scorsese.

Later, Weber went on to work as Tim Burton’s first studio editor for “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,” and the second unit director for “Batman Returns.”

Weber also worked on “Gigli,” the 2003 film known for sparking what would become one of the most iconic celebrity couples in pop culture: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Additional titles include “Beverly Hills Cop,” “Days of Thunder,” “Nacho Libre,” “The Warriors,” and “The Predator.”

He has been nominated twice for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, first for “Top Gun” and again for “The Thin Red Line.”
