Don't forget the US dollar LTM has also declined 10%. A silent 10% reduction in the true purchasing power of every American. Raw material costs increased by tariffs and purchased with weak dollars are smashing American manufacturers. Is Trump trying to destroy the country? Economics isn't hard, just easy math. The real smart guys actually usually go into engineering or science.
No one will give him the credit but the irony is, the only thing keeping the engine room running right now is the tail end of the Biden $3.1T fiscal stimulus. We’re watching the 80-year global free market being dismantled by trade wars, while the ‘Big Beautiful’ tax giveaway to the wealthy just added another $3T+ to the deficit. For the middle class we got ‘No Tax on Tips’ a hollow olive branch while the cost of living spikes due to tariffs and stagflation, besides being irrelevant if you use the personal exemption. We’re living on borrowed time with the fiscal floor from 2021 the only reason we aren't in a free-fall recession already, despite every effort to tank the economy with protectionism and elite-friendly tax breaks.

GDP is 70% based on consumer spending. Which was up 1.6% while the Q4 Gross Domestic Price Purchase Index is 3.7% and Q4 Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index is 2.7%. In other words: the real economy contracts in volume of goods and services. Even according to official numbers. And I think we can all agree that real world prices rose much more than 3.7% year-over-year.
Making it slightly worse: imports vs. exports gave a small GDP boost but that means nothing for the economy. Actually, a decline in imports implies less demand. It certainly matches truckers reporting that truck stops are a lot more quiet.
